Sunday Snippet

Book 1: Gods of Love series
In honor of the upcoming Valentine's Day, this is week two highlighting my Cupid titles. This week, I'm featuring the first book in my Gods of Love series. Enjoy!
~~*~~
Daphne Charissa isn't a chubby little guy with wings and a quiver of arrows. But she does belong to the Cupid race—a race of devastatingly beautiful creatures who excel at helping others find love, while remaining loveless themselves throughout their long lives.

When Daphne falls in love with Bion Chronos, she launches the two of them into a direct confrontation with the Furies as they fight to protect their own love and win release from the curse of lovelessness for the whole Cupid race. The problem is, the Furies have no intention of letting them win, and the lovers can't seem to keep their hands off each other long enough to form a coherent plan.

It's gonna be an interesting battle.

I knew he’d entered the building as soon as his feet hit the foyer tile.

I hurried toward my office, preferring to meet him under the professional aura the tastefully decorated room provided. I had just landed in my chair when I heard the elevator ding.

The heavy doors slid open.

I forced myself to turn away from my open office door. Peering at my computer screen without really seeing it, I visualized him as he stalked toward my office door, his long, elegant limbs moving with the grace of a large cat and his gorgeous gray-green eyes focused on me behind my desk.

I studiously ignored him.

He didn’t speak.

It wasn’t the first time I’d gotten the impression he knew that I was able to sense his presence, even when I pretended that I couldn’t.

I turned finally, unable to resist and sucked in a breath before I could stop myself.

Bion Chronos was not a god but he should have been.

His long body leaned against the door frame with a muscular grace that was inborn and unconscious rather than studied. One shoulder, amazingly broad, leaned casually against the polished wood and his long arms crossed his chest, bulging a bit under the tight white shirt he wore.

The shirt was unbuttoned at the top, showing soft, dark curls across a broad chest and had been left untucked. His ridiculously long legs were crossed too and were encased in tight jeans. One scuffed brown boot was tucked over the other on the shiny cherry floor of my office.

My eyes caressed the entire picture, from the top of his head, covered in silky black hair that was cut short to frame a strong face, down the long length of him, to the heavy boots. Then, against my will, my gaze started back up, lingering a bit too long somewhere in the middle, where the jeans did some really nice things just under the loose tails of the shirt.

I licked my lips and forced myself to look at his face, which wasn’t exactly a hardship. His eyes were a dark, gray-green, surrounded by thick, black lashes. His jaw was strong and square, with a permanent dark stubble that he couldn’t seem to stay ahead of with his razor. His chin had a large dimple in the middle that I wanted to stick my tongue into.

His skin was a dark and probably natural golden brown.

I did a mental head shake and blinked, realizing how far I’d fallen beyond my professional and self imposed restrictions. Gulping audibly, I focused my gaze on his gorgeous eyes.

They had the longest, thickest lashes I’d ever seen.

“Hello, Daphne.” His voice was husky and deeper than an exploratory well in the Sahara.

I gulped again. “Mr. Chronos.”

He shook his dark head and pushed himself away from the door frame. He didn’t exactly walk toward me. It was more like he sauntered across the room, the casualness of the movement not hiding the firm purpose inherent in his steps. He stopped in front of my desk and placed both hands on its cluttered surface. He leaned toward me over the desk, his full lips slightly open and gave me a slow smile. “I must insist you call me Bion.”

His cologne swamped me in masculine musk, urging me into its sphere like a vampire’s call. I felt my eyes widen. I wasn’t entirely sure that the aroma came from a bottle. I suspected it was his own personal scent, pure male pheromones.

I couldn’t help myself, I leaned away in self defense and pushed my chair back a bit frantically, catching my foot on a slightly ajar drawer and nicking my soft, black leather boot.

“Damn!” I muttered. They had been my favorite pair of boots.

He lifted his hands from the surface of my desk and lowered himself into the chair that had previously contained Dema Pence. His eyes tracked me carefully as I moved around my office, pretending to shut it down for the night.

I was really just stalling for time. Trying to figure out how I could get out of the appointment.

When I ran out of things to do I turned to him and forced a smile. “I guess I’m ready.”

He gave me a slow grin that melted the ligaments in my knees. “And you’re obviously thrilled.”

I smiled. I couldn’t help it. Shrugging, I grabbed my purse and headed toward the door. He fell in behind me, placing his hand in the small of my back.

My skin, under his hand, tingled deliciously.

“I am. I love my job, Mr…”

“Uh uh uh.” He shook a long finger at me. The nail on the end was clean, square and nicely trimmed.
Incredibly I think I blushed. “Bion.”

“Generally I feel sorry for workaholics, Daphne. But in your case I’m pleased that your work forces you to spend time with me.”

I did a mental head shake, deciding that Mr. Chronos and I would need to have an understanding. Obviously he wasn’t up on the whole, untouchable Cupid thing. Not that I could tell him I was a Cupid. Humans didn’t know, nor would they believe if they knew, about my race.

It was just better for everyone if we kept a low profile.

But occasionally a human tried to breach the unspoken laws governing our two races. That would be fine except that, ultimately, they always rejected us for reasons that even they didn’t fathom.

It had been declared by the gods. Cupids could not enjoy long-lasting love.

An unbreakable rule.

Yet, as Bion Chronos carefully handed me into his small, black sports car and leaned over me unnecessarily to click my seat belt closed, I inhaled his wonderful musk and wished it wasn’t so.

For about the hundredth time since he’d walked into my life.

Sam's Sunday Snippet

Hermes Adonis has a broken heart and an attitude problem. When the Fates send him on a forced sabbatical from Cupid’s Arrow he’s not a happy Cupid. Hermes spends his days sucking Brimstone and anticipating his total destruction. But when a dark haired beauty throws him to the ground and puts a knife to his throat, he feels an unexpected spark in his dead heart.

Nidras is a cursed demon princess. She’s pretty tapped out just trying to kill the wizard who holds her curse. The last thing she needs is a man, especially one whose sexy head is fuzzy from sucking Brimstone all day.  But Hermes is funny and determined, and Nidras is lonely and scared. And when they get together in a room, the heat they create nearly melts the paint from the walls.

So let the games begin. Will there be two winners? Or will they both lose, giving up their one chance at love ever after?

A wisp of flower scented air touched my skin and I turned just as a long, deadly looking knife arced through the air toward my head.

I ducked and kicked out, my instincts reverting automatically to the decades of martial arts training I’d undergone in an effort to stay in shape and manage vast levels of sexual frustration.

The figure with the knife was small, agile and quick. He dodged my first kick and came at me again with the knife. I countered the blow with an outstretched fist and spun, levering my leg outward with the force of my spin.

The figure easily jumped the kick and countered with one of his own, catching me just under the jaw as I completed my spin.

I went down hard and felt my black-clad attacker slamming into my chest as I hit the ground.

Something long and metallic settled against my throat. When I moved the knife bit into my skin, causing me to gasp and settle immediately into an unnatural stillness.

I squinted through the steam and drug haze in my mind in an effort to see the face of my assailant.

If I was gonna die I wanted to know who was killing me. And maybe even find out why.

The face above me was black and featureless. It had no hair and its skin looked shiny, impossibly smooth.

I figured it was some kind of new demon I’d never seen before. Whatever it was it smelled like sun drenched flowers.

But then the thing reached toward its head and pulled. Its skin started to separate with a soft thwucking sound. I grimaced. “Eieww!” I exclaimed.

The slick, black skin came away easily in the demon’s hand and a bright, oval face with peach tinted cheeks was looking down at me. The creature had wide lavender eyes with the longest, thickest black lashes I’d ever seen and spiky, black hair. Its lips were full and peach colored. They looked incredibly soft.

I found myself staring at those lips, licking my own in anticipation of kissing them. “You’re a girl.”

The lips parted slightly, allowing a husky laugh to escape. “And you’re a Brimstone-headed bum.”

I shrugged. What could I say? She was right.

He took a step closer, leaned down until his lips were a hair's breadth from mine and said, "I find myself somehow... drawn... to you."

I jerked my gaze back toward the fire, fighting with everything I had not to give in to an urge to pull him into my arms and consume him with my lips and body. But I knew that wasn't right. It couldn't be right. I barely knew the man.

He didn't move away. His breath against my face was a warm, sweet promise. I stopped breathing, trapped within my body's raging need like a deer in oncoming headlights. I closed my eyes and prayed my stillness would help me resist. But it didn't help. My body nearly vibrated with need.

He touched my cheek with his lips, "Athena."

I whimpered slightly and turned, closing the distance between us, my lips melting hungrily over his.

As soon as our lips touched it was as if a spark had ignited and something exploded through me. The flash fire was more than heat, it was light and sound and incredible sensation.

His arms snaked around my waist, pulling me indecently tight against his body. His teeth drew my bottom lip in, nibbling softly before his tongue swept over the tingling aftermath and slid into my mouth to tangle with mine.

I slipped my hands under his t-shirt and up his smooth back. His skin warmed and tightened under my hands and the scent of him wafted over me, infusing itself into my senses like a drug.

The kiss deepened and held, pulling us both inexorably into our own place, our private niche, apart from the real world playing itself out on those streets around us.

An untouchable, incredible place.

I thought I'd stopped breathing. But discovered I was sharing his breath.

Between my thighs, a clenching wetness told me I wanted the man in my arms more than I'd wanted anyone in a long, long, very long time.

A warm, salty tear slid between our lips and Damian pulled away. "You're crying." He looked so alarmed I laughed.

"It's okay. I'm okay."

He stared at me for a beat longer and then lowered his head again.

I closed my eyes in anticipation of another kiss. Instead I felt his hot tongue, sliding across my cheek where the tears had been.

His hands fell away. The air around me grew cool again.

I gasped and opened my eyes.

He was gone. Leaving only a thought in my mind, which I was pretty sure had to be a figment of my imagination.

Take care, Athena.

Bion walked in the front door of the firm. He was carrying a single lavender rose in one hand and wearing a smile. He walked toward me, past the receptionist and extended the rose. “Good morning.”
Without thinking I took it. And then looked down at it in shock. A lavender rose, representing love at first sight. Damn! I tried to hand it back to him.
He shook his head “Uh-uh. You accepted it.”
I frowned. “I can’t accept this, Mr. Chronos.”
He frowned back at me. “Bion.”
I turned away. “Mr. Chronos, can you join me in my office please?” I nodded to Becky, our receptionist, who shrugged at me as if to say, “Sorry, I couldn’t stop him.”
I didn’t turn to see if he was following me. I didn’t need to. I could feel every breath he took, every beat of his heart and every line of his hard body in my soul. I breathed deeply and his unique, knee-melting scent filled my head, making me dizzy with lust.
I really needed to get a grip.
I touched the door frame as I entered my office to steady myself and then started moving toward my desk. I heard the door close and turned in panic. It wasn’t safe for me to be closed into the office with him. I opened my mouth to tell him to open the door but I didn’t get the chance.
He was standing so close behind me my breasts rubbed across his chest as I turned. I gasped.
He smiled. His lips found mine.
My eyes popped wide and, to my extreme credit, I did try to push him away. For about three seconds. And then I succumbed to the drug that was Bion.
My knees buckled and his arms snugged around my waist, holding me upright and so tight against his body that I couldn’t move. Couldn’t form a straight thought.
I stopped breathing my own air and consumed his instead. It was a heady brew filled with sexual heat and untamed musk. I drank it down like fine wine. My head spinning with the kick from it.
